Hydration for Concentration

Do you ever begin a conversation and suddenly stop mid flow and wonder what the blazes you were just talking about? When your body is dehydrated, so is your brain!

Weight loss

Water is essential in metabolising fat so can help with weight loss.  Adequate hydration may also naturally suppress your appetite and will help support your body to efficiently exercise.

Helps reduce hot flushes in menopause

Water encourages your body to keep an even body temperature through sweat and respiration.

Reduces head aches and migraines

A lack of water can increase your chances of suffering with headaches and migraines.  But too little, can sometimes be too late which is why regular water intake is important.

Lubricates your joints

If you’re not drinking enough, your joints may suffer attributing to aches and pains and this will reduce your desire for exercise and movement, which is crucial during menopause.

Water is also beneficial in helping your body to use nutrients by breaking down essential nutrients and transporting them around your body, to where they are needed.  If you’re lacking in water your body will also find it harder to flush out toxins through your urine.

How do you know if you’re dehydrated?

Firstly, you maybe suffering with some of the symptoms listed about but you will also be able to tell by looking at the colour of your urine.  It should be a light, straw colour and if it’s any darker, the chances are, you’re dehydrated.

Always seek medical help if;

  • you notice blood in your urine
  • your urine is abnormal in colour or is milky or cloudy
  • your urine has a distinct smell

How much water should you be drinking each day?

The recommended intake of water for women is 2.7 litres per day which is about 8 large glasses of water (fruit teas adds to your intake), for men it is slightly more at 3.7 litres.

Here are my tips to increase your water intake

1. It’s time to make water your new BFF!

Download a water reminder app onto your phone.  Click here   👉   Water Reminder Apps to see the best apps, depending on which phone you have.  A gentle, regular reminder will help you to reach your goal of 8 glasses of water per day.

2. Mix it up

Fruit teas go towards your daily intake – try swapping a caffeinated drink for a fruit tea. Pukka teas are my all time favourite, they have a great variety.

3. Hydrate before you caffeinate

Caffeinated drinks like tea, coffee and fizzy drinks are naturally dehydrating. Have a large glass of water before your caffeinated drink to keep you hydrated.

4. Keep your water refridgerated

Cooled, bottled water can be more palatable, keep a large glass bottle of water in the fridge.

5. Pimp up your water

Adding lemon, cucumber, mint or infused fruit will help your make your water tastier
